Babushka Battalion
The Babushka Battalion is a group of elderly women volunteers in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. The group creates everything from bed sheets to clothing items that are sent to the front lines of the Ukraine-Russian war. The battalion began its volunteer journey in 2014 when a war between Russia and Ukraine ensued following the annexation of Crimea and an uprising in Ukraine against the then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.
Protez Foundation
The Protez Foundation has a center for citizens and soldiers who lost limbs due to the war between Russia and Ukraine that began in 2022. The foundation’s centers in Kyiv, Ukraine and Minnesota offer free prosthetics that could cost thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. One of the patients that frequents the Kyiv center was Mykhailo Marochkanych who lost his leg after a drone strike on the front lines.
Zhytomyr Regional Clinical Hospital
The Zhytomyr Regional Clinical Hospital sees hundreds of patients everyday with a rise in patient needs since the start of the Ukraine-Russian war in 2022. Two surgeons at the hospital run the operation providing medical care from small wounds to shattered bones. Soldiers from the front lines, with more complex needs for surgery, are sent to the hospital.
